Frequently Asked Questions
The Basics
+ What Size Vehicle will I need?
You will need to provide your towbar rating, tow ball rating, make and model of your vehicle upon hiring a caravan through us. You will find the van specification on the caravan details page.
Additionally, you will need to consider the Australian Design Rules.
According to the Australian Design Rules (ADR), all trailers with a Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) exceeding 750kg are required to be fitted with an efficient braking system. Our caravans are fitted with electric brakes; therefore, it is a condition of Bantam Caravan Hire that you have an electric brake controller installed in your car or we can supply free of charge a remote unit that sits within your vehicle and acts as the brake controller.
+ I have a small car will this tow your type of caravan?
Bantam Caravan Hire has specifically set the business up to have small-sized caravans that are lightweight so smaller cars can be used, we understand that not everybody has a large 4wheel drive to tow a caravan.
We still need to make sure your small car will be suited to tow the caravan safely, please see attached tow list to match your car, or just ask and we will assist you.
+ I’ve never hired a caravan before, what do I need to know?
Don’t worry, we will give you a full demonstration of how to set up the caravan when you arrive. We also have a full instruction manual in the vans.
We are also always available and happy to help if you need to ask further questions on 0477 209 038 .
Remember we are here to make your camping experience memorable and we are behind you all the way!
+ Do I need an electric trailer brake controller on my car whilst towing the caravan?
Yes, this is required by law, if your car does not have an electric brake controller fitted to your car, Bantam Caravan Hire has portable units that work remotely and complies with the law. The remote unit is included in your hire.
+ Where can I travel and how far?
You can go anywhere on mainland Australia, and providing you don’t travel within illegal areas (there is no insurance cover in these areas).
Bantam Caravan Hire encourages off-road use however any damage sustained will be deducted from your bond and traveling down narrow tracks with overgrown bush/trees may scrape down the sides of the caravan, again this will be deducted from the bond.
+ How much should I allow for fuel?
You need to take into consideration the towing conditions of your vehicle, luggage weight, speed, hills, and a host of other variables. A general idea for budgeting your holiday you will use approximately 25-30% more fuel to cover the same distance as you would without the caravan attached.
